The Quanta magazine article Elliptic Curve `Murmurations’ Found with AI Take Flight profiles research by collaboration PI Andrew Sutherland and research scientist David Lowry-Duda. These phenomena were discovered through analysis of elliptic curves in the LMFDB.

 

work of Jerson Caro to appear in Inventiones

The manuscript “A Chabauty-Coleman bound for surfaces”, by collaboration research scientist Jerson Caro and Hector Pasten, will appear in Inventiones mathematicae! This work provides the first application of this beautiful technique to higher-dimensional varieties. The preprint is available at arXiv:2102.01055.

 

Kieffer to assume permanent research position in France

Congratulations to collaboration research scientist Jean Kieffer, who will take up a position with the Centre national de la recherche scientifique! He will join the Caramba team led by Emmanuel Thomé, in Nancy, starting January 1st.

Srinivasan to take up faculty position at Boston University

Hassett elected a Fellow of the AAAS

Collaboration PI Brendan Hassett was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science for “significant contributions to the field of algebraic geometry and leadership to the mathematics community.”

Balakrishnan elected a fellow of the AWM

Congratulations to PI Jennifer Balakrishnan for her selection as a member of the 2023 class of fellows of the Association for Women in Mathematics. She was cited “For her support of women in mathematics through mentoring and advising; for organizing and supporting programs for women and girls, especially Women in Sage and Women in Numbers; for her work in outreach and education, including GirlsGetMath; and for working to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in research communities.”

Poonen wins Doob Prize

Congratulations to Bjorn Poonen for the 2023 Joseph L. Doob Prize, awarded to his book Rational Points on Varieties.  This was published by the American Mathematical Society in 2017 in the series Graduate Studies in Mathematics.

 

 

 

Elkies delivers 2022 Ross Lecture

Collaboration PI Noam Elkies delivered the 2022 Arnold Ross lecture, titled Sphere packings and codes in various dimensions. The lecture is sponsored by the American Mathematical Society to inspire high school students through mathematics beyond the traditional classroom.

Simons Collaboration volume appears

A volume containing papers presenting work of the collaboration has just been published by Springer in its Simons Symposia book series.

David Lowry-Duda contributes plotting code to SageMath

A portrait of a modular form by collaboration member David Lowry-Duda is featured in an article on the Langlands Program in the German popular science magazine Spektrum der Wissenschaft. His code for complex plots will be featured in release 9.6 of SageMath.
