Abstract
This workshop focuses on catalyzing new research directions at the intersection of discrete algorithms and emerging applications in artificial intelligence (AI) and data science. This includes exploring how discrete algorithms can aid in emerging AI and data science applications, as well as exploring ways that AI and machine learning can aid in solving classical combinatorial problems.
Combinatorial algorithms have long played an important role in scientific computing applications, with examples including graph algorithms for sparse linear algebra routines and partitioning methods for workload balance in parallel computing. More recently, the availability of massive amounts of data and advances in high performance computing have led to a wealth of new applications in data science and AI where combinatorial algorithms play an important role. Despite exciting new opportunities, discrete algorithms researchers are not always aware of ways that they can contribute to and benefit from advances in AI and data science. Similarly, AI practitioners may not always know where to turn for solutions to combinatorial problems that arise in their work.
This workshop will bring together an interdisciplinary group of discrete mathematicians, algorithm engineers, and AI experts, who are dedicated to bridging the gap between theory and practice for combinatorial algorithms and their applications. Two key themes will be to explore (1) improved models and theory for combinatorial methods in AI and data science and (2) scaling combinatorial methods in applications. Topics of interest include graph and hypergraph algorithms, tensor-based methods, matrix computations, and topological data analysis.
In addition to advancing research in these areas, the workshop will serve as a community-building event for the SIAM activity group on Applied and Computational Discrete Algorithms (ACDA).

Application Information
ICERM welcomes applications from faculty, postdocs, graduate students, industry scientists, and other researchers who wish to participate. Some funding may be available for travel and lodging. Graduate students who apply must have their advisor submit a statement of support in order to be considered.

- Scanned original receipts are required for all expenses
- Airfare receipt must show full itinerary and payment

- Allowable mileage is reimbursed at prevailing IRS Business Rate and trip documented via Google Maps PDF

- Reimbursement Timing
6–8 weeks after all documentation is sent to ICERM. All reimbursements are reviewed by multiple Brown University offices.
- Reimbursement Deadline
Submissions must be received within 30 days of ICERM departure to avoid applicable taxes. No submissions are accepted after six months.
