Mathematicians Tackle Global Issues
December 7, 2012 - More than 100 academic institutions and scholarly societies, ICERM among them, have joined in a major world-wide initiative: Mathematics of Planet Earth (MPE) 2013. This year-long effort will highlight the contributions made by mathematics in tackling global problems, including natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and tsunamis; climate change; sustainability; and pandemics. MPE2013 partners will sponsor workshops, research conferences, public lectures, outreach events, and educational opportunities for all ages. Each country from a partner institution will host a special launch to the year.

Ricardo Cortez honored during Blackwell-Tapia Conference at ICERM
November 13, 2012 - November 10, 2012: Dr. Ricardo Cortez of Tulane University was awarded the 2012 Blackwell-Tapia Prize in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the fields of fluid dynamics and mathematical modeling and for serving as a role model for diversity in the mathematical sciences. Mayor Angel Taveras also presented Dr. Cortez with a citizen citation from the City of Providence. The Blackwell-Tapia prize was conferred by Dr. Trachette Jackson, the 2010 recipient of the prize, during a banquet that ended the two day Blackwell-Tapia Conference hosted by ICERM.
