ICERM Associate Director Launches Data Science Initiative at Brown

October 25, 2016 - Today marks the exciting launch of Brown's new Data Science Initiative. The initiative, which includes a new master's program, will bolster research that integrates data in new scholarly contexts and prepare students to be leaders in a data-enabled society. Congrats to DSI Director Jeff Brock, who is also the Chair of Brown's Mathematics Department and an ICERM Associate Director. Jill Pipher Named Brown's Next VP for Research

September 21, 2016 - Brown University announced that Jill Pipher, ICERM's founding director emeritus, has been named the Vice President for Research beginning July 1, 2017. We send her our heartfelt congratulations! Reporting directly to the provost, the vice president for research is responsible for developing and implementing a strategic plan for research that enhances overall research capacity, promotes a culture of excellence and productivity, and raises Brown's research profile nationally and internationally.

Mathematicians, police join forces on the mathematics of crime

August 19, 2016 - A weeklong "Predictive Policing" workshop at ICERM brought leaders of the Providence Police Department together with 25 mathematicians from across the globe to explore methods of using data to better anticipate and manage criminal activity. Researchers used real data from the City of Providence to look for interesting trends and patterns that might help police analyze criminal activity.
